Collin answers a few questions first-time guests have around booking a Caribbean yacht charter experience.
If you have questions that are not answered below, feel free to get in touch with us, we are extremely adaptable and open to accommodating interesting requests!
Q: Hi Collin! We are busy booking our charter, and we are not sure whether we want a full-board charter or a half-board charter. What is the difference, and which one do you recommend?
A: It really depends on your preferences. Our two options, full-board charter and half-board charter are designed to suit different needs. We recommend you decide whether you prefer having some adventure and opportunity to explore the local cuisine, or whether you find comfort in knowing your gourmet meals are taken care of in one convenient, luxurious location.
A full-board charter is a perfect option for those who want to relax, knowing all of the logistics are taken care of for them. The menu for the week is crafted around your likes and dislikes based on a group preference sheet, and all food and beverages consumed on board are included in this vacation. Provisioning is done ahead of time by us, so from the moment you step on board, your only concern should be locating the beer cooler.
A half-board charter is ideal for those who would like to have some meals provided on-board, but would also like to eat on-shore at local restaurants to experience the local cuisine and atmosphere. On a typical half-board, we prepare on board all breakfasts, three lunches, and three dinners. All onboard drinks and incidental costs are included in the cost of a half-board charter.
Q: We love the idea of an island holiday, but we also want to decide what we feel like doing when we wake up each day, rather than planning it all beforehand. Can we choose where we want to go and what we want to do, ourselves?
A: Of course! We can work with you to make sure your every expectation is met and surpassed, whether your group is interested in barhopping, lying on the beaches, or enthusiastic about finding secluded coves and never seeing another boat. Each vacation is catered to the unique interests and preferences of the group.
Q: When and where do we board the boat to start our holiday, and when and where we disembark again?
A: For the majority of charters, you will board the boat at noon on the first day, and disembark at noon on the last day. The location of your pick-up and drop-off is typically coordinated with us and can vary depending upon your point of arrival or ultimate destination. We typically pick-up and drop-off at Red Hook in St. Thomas.
Q: What are gratuities, and how do we pay them?
A gratuity is essentially a tip or bonus given to the captain and crew based on your level of satisfaction with the service provided. A typical gratuity is 15-20% of the charter rate and is usually given to the captain at the end of the vacation.
Q: What if someone in our group wants to fish?
A: Depending on your destination there may be some requirements or restrictions on fishing. Please do contact us prior to your charter so that we can ensure all proper licensing has been obtained. This will ensure a happy journey where your expectations are met.
Q: When is hurricane season, and what happens if a hurricane comes through, will you ensure we are safe and able to return home?
A: Hurricane season runs from the start of June and runs right through November. In the event of a hurricane, we will take the safety of the passengers very seriously. Most likely you will be taken to shore so that the captain and crew can prepare the boat for the storm. If you need any assistance with hotel reservations or departing flights, you can contact us at that time.
Q: What about trip insurance, is it compulsory?
A Trip insurance is an elective additional cost to protect against trip interruption or cancellation. Please follow the link to procure your desired level of insurance through TravelEx.
Q: We are busy working out our holiday budget. What is not included in the charter rate?
A: In general, any food or beverages consumed off of the yacht are not included in the charter rate. Also not included are any fishing licenses, premium beverages, dockage fees should you elect to stay in a marina, rental equipment, and any souvenirs or on-shore excursions you elect to partake in.
